In pursuit of creating a platform for data freedom that enables private user data to be freely composable, we believe that user data should adhere to the following principles:

Be self-sovereign and fully controlled by users

With Terminal 3, user data is stored in decentralized storage and users have ultimate control over its use and its privacy. There should only ever be one unified golden record of a person that can be expressed in multiple ways across different protocols and platforms.

Be freely composable while remaining secure and private

Terminal 3 is compatible and interoperable with numerous different systems, blockchains, and ecosystems, enabling a unified identity for all applications.

Never be copied from decentralized storage

No company or third-party can ever access your personal data for any commercial purpose. Instead, identity claims and data necessary for transactions are enabled through privacy-enhancing technologies, such as zero-knowledge proofs. While users have the utmost right to data privacy, that does not mean users can remain anonymous. When interacting in regulated environments, like with digital assets, regulators, licensed institutions, and governments may still have gated access to personal information.

Be stored off-chain and remain mutable

While the transparent, immutable, and distributed nature of the blockchain make it ideal for efficient transactions like settling payments, user data will never be stored on a public blockchain on the Terminal 3 platform. User identity needs to be protected, and with quantum-computing set to be possible in less than 10 years, there is no guarantee that publicly available, encrypted data will be safe on the blockchain. User identity can also change throughout time and users should be given the flexibility to amend their identity without it being permanent. If stored immutably, their ability to edit personal information and to invoke their Right to be Forgotten no longer becomes possible.

Be a positive-sum game

The move towards a decentralized world may put more power back into the hands of individuals, but businesses should not suffer from a lack of data that they are no longer able to provide essential goods and services at scale. Mass adoption of radical identity solutions will not occur until enterprises are actually incentivized to create genuine use cases that can onboard hundreds of millions of users onto existing platforms powered by new technologies. It is possible to unlock value for both users and businesses so that everyone is empowered to participate in a flourishing data economy that benefits all parties.
